The Moving House Cleaning Checklist: The only one you need

Moving house can seem like an overwhelming and daunting task. The list of things to do might seem like they are never-ending! You have to pack, clean, move, and then clean the new place, unpack and clean again - and this is simplifying things a lot. Think about it, you are basically cleaning 2 houses in its entirety in the span of a few days. Whether you are getting your current home ready for resale or renting it out, you definitely need to leave it in a spotless condition to attract potential buyers and renters. As for the house you are moving into, you would most certainly want the condition to be pristine when you start to settle into your new life in the new home.

The most essential times to do the housekeeping is firstly, after the movers have removed all your belongings from your old home, and secondly, before and after the movers have placed your belongings in your new home. This might sound like a very colossal task but fear not! We have compiled a checklist to help out with your cleaning process and by the end of it, whether you are moving in or moving out, the house will look clean and shiny ready for its occupants.

Before we begin the checklist, here are some tips you can follow!

Have all the cleaning supplies at the ready. Some of these supplies include, but are not limited to: disinfectants, glass cleaners, cloths for cleaning and dusting, vacuum cleaners, brooms, dustpans, buckets, mops and rubber gloves.

Start from top to bottom, and back to front. This ensures you do not soil an already cleaned surface, and prevents you from double cleaning an area.

Start with the cleaning tasks that do not involve water; the dry cleaning tasks such as vacuuming and sweeping. This is because it would be tough to wipe down surfaces when there is still dust on them.

Okay, now you are good to go! The checklist begins with general home cleaning and moves down room by room. You may rearrange the order according to tip 2 - remember to start from top to bottom, and back to front!

General home cleaning checklist:

Clean up the walls.

Remove any screws, nails, hooks, or tape that is left on the walls. Repair any damaged holes on the walls and then paint. Give the walls a good wipedown.

Dust and Vacuum each room.

Clean the corners, doors, floors, curtains, ceiling fans and lights with dusters and vacuums to remove any dust from these surfaces.

Mop the floors and wipe all surfaces.

For rooms with tile or wood flooring, give them a good mop up. Wipe down all the surfaces. This includes windows, mirrors and glass surfaces with glass cleaners and wipes.

After completing the general home cleaning checklist, you can move on to clean each room!

Bedroom and living room cleaning checklist:

Clean the air conditioner.

The simplest way is to use a vacuum but you can use chemical cleaners to do so as well. You should also clean the air conditioner filter as well.

Dry-clean or vacuum the curtains.

A curtain is a prime place for dust collection, so be sure to send it off for dry cleaning or simply vacuum it yourself.

Clear all drawers, cabinets, and wardrobes. Clean them inside out.

Be sure to give the insides of these furniture a good cleansing as well as the outside.

Clean the upholstery.

Depending on the type of material of your upholstery, you can clean it by vacuuming or with a fabric cleaner.

Bathroom cleaning checklist:

Dust and wipe any and all vents.

Start from the top and clean the dust and grind off the vents first.

Disinfect, scrub and rinse your bathtubs or showers.

Scrub off all the grime around the drain hole.

Clear all drawers and cabinets and countertops.

Give these surfaces a good clean inside and out, including the mirrors and other exterior surfaces.

Clean the sink.

Remember to clean and scrub all areas of the sink, including the tap and under the sink as well.

Disinfect the toilet.

Spray disinfectant and give your entire towel bowl a clean. Give it a good scrub and wipe down, leaving it shiny and new.

Scrub the tiles.

Do not forget to finish off by cleaning the floor of the toilet by vacuuming and then mopping or scrubbing.

Kitchen cleaning checklist:

Clean out anything that is not a fixture in the kitchen.

Remove items from your countertops, fridge, drawers and cabinets.

Wipe countertops, drawers and cabinets.

Give these areas a good wipedown.Check all corners for dust, residues or mold. Clean your countertops with soap and water to disinfect.

Scrub the sink and tap.

Clean and sanitise this area thoroughly with either soap and water or with appropriate disinfectant cleaning products.

Clean the appliances.

Needless to say, these are being used every day and they should be given a thorough cleaning.

Refrigerator - Defrost the fridge and give the insides a good wipedown with soap water. Clean every drawer and shelf. Let it dry fully before turning it on again.

Microwave and oven - Clean and scrub the inside of a microwave with a sponge.

Stove - Remove the grills and clean them separately by giving them a scrub. Be sure to remove all grease from the grills and surface of the stove before putting everything back together.
